The division has contracted with the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) to carry out tobacco retailer assessments for all tobacco retailers in the state in FY19. The following around materials used by assessors in the field.

Though the webinars are not required, the Division strongly advises that you and/or your coalition members attend them to broaden your understanding of the possibilities to educate about tobacco control in your service area.

FY17 Webinars

1) How to Tell Your Story with the Counter Tools Store Mapper (September 20, 2016)

Take a deeper dive into store map and assessment data to find a story about your area of interest and discuss how to share that story with community stakeholders. We’ll highlight some common themes from each CHC region, review tips on how to use the Store Mapper functions to find a story, and include a case study from Johnson County.

2) Community Engagement with Charla Hodges (November 15, 2016; 10am CDT)

We’ll explore the principles and purpose of community engagement as it relates to Point-of-Sale work in Iowa. Come prepared to share your experiences with community engagement as we address strategies for and barriers to engagement before planning some action steps for further community engagement.

3) Eyes on the Prize (February 23, 2017; 10am CDT)

With the number of evidence-based success stories growing, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to implementing policy. This session will focus on materials from ChangeLab Solutions, Public Health Law Center, and ordinances that have passed successfully, with a focus on Midwest states.

4) Keeping Youth Engaged Through the Summer (April 18, 2017; 10am CST)

Just because school isn’t in session doesn’t mean learning can’t continue! We’ll review a number of individual and group activities for youth awareness, organizing, and advocacy.

Users will get in depth practice with navigating the tobacco retailer and enforcement tabs in the Mapper.
Users will learn about the information available in different types of reports and gain foundational knowledge to apply when users look for stories in their own areas.
