The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has assumed a responsibility to ensure that radiographers receive adequate radiation safety training. An effective method for evaluating the adequacy of such training is a written examination program. Under rules adopted by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Agreement States, radiographers nationwide are required to pass such an exam in order to complete the certification process.

The State of Texas, Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has developed an examination in 3 categories: x-ray, radioactive materials and a combination of x-ray and radioactive materials. Currently DSHS and the Conference of Radiation Control Programs Directors, Inc (CRCPD) have an agreement which provides for the use of the examination by another state.

IDPH, Bureau of Radiological Health and the CRCPD have an agreement relative to Industrial Radiographer examinations. IDPH is responsible for the scheduling and administration of the Industrial Radiography exam in the State of Iowa.

A completed application for the industrial radiographer exam along with the non-refundable fee of $175.00 per applicant must be submitted by the application deadline, which is set 30 days before the scheduled exam date. The time and place of the exam is determined by IDPH.

The following steps must be completed to be eligible to apply for an initial Industrial Radiographer exam:

  • It must be documented that the trainee has completed an agency approved 40 hour training course and successfully completed a practical examination covering the material.
  • The trainee must provide proof of completion of their on-the-job training as a radiographer trainee, (if on-job-training takes place in the State of Iowa an industrial radiographer trainee card must be applied for and received before training commences). The training documentation must show a minimum of 320 hours of active participation in the performance of industrial radiography using radioactive material or 160 hours of active participation in the performance of industrial radiography using radiation machines, or both. Any individual utilizing both material and machines must complete 480 hours of on-the-job training.

Active participation does not include safety meetings or classroom training.

If the application for exam is for renewal of an individual's industrial radiographer's card, submit a copy of the current industrial radiographer card with application and fees.

The training and testing requirements for radiographic personnel can be found under Iowa Administrative Code (IAC) 641-45.1(10).

A picture i.d. card must be presented at time of examination.
