The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) reminds Iowans that vaccinations and healthy behaviors are the best ways to prevent the spread of illness during this holiday season. “There is still time to get a flu vaccination to offer protection over the holidays,” said IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. “As people gather for meals and parties, they’re more likely to spread illness around. Receiving the flu vaccine will help you stay healthy to enjoy all the festivities, and will also keep you from making others sick.”

What Gift Are You Giving Your Child?

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, Iowans are busy looking for fun and memorable gifts for family and friends; however, not all gifts are intended for all ages and audiences. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) urges Iowans to think about the appropriateness of the gifts you give this season.

“Gift items like alcohol and lottery tickets are reserved for the adult marketplace and other popular gifts like certain movies and video games may not be appropriate for everyone on your list,” said Eric Preuss of the IDPH Office of Problem Gambling Treatment and Prevention. Preuss says it is especially important to be aware of the potential risks associated with gambling-related gifts.
