Tick Season Underway in Iowa

Spring in Iowa means planting fields and gardens, outdoor recreation, warm days, cool nights and, as a reminder from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), it also means the start of tick season. IDPH encourages Iowans to enjoy the many opportunities to be active outdoors, while remembering to protect against ticks.

HIV Diagnoses in Iowa Fall to Lowest Level in 11 Years

A new report by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) finds new diagnoses of HIV among Iowans decreased by 19 percent from 2013 to 2014. According to the 2014 End-of-Year HIV Disease Surveillance Report, 99 Iowans were diagnosed with HIV last year; the fewest diagnoses since 88 were recorded in 2003. “We’ll need more data to tell if this is a temporary decrease or the start of a sustained downward trend,” said IDPH HIV Surveillance Coordinator Jerry Harms. Even so, the 2014 report shows promising data in the battle against HIV/AIDS.
