Falls Prevention Awareness Day is September 21 (9/14/18)

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), Iowa Department on Aging and Iowa Falls Prevention Coalition join partners across the state in recognizing September 21, 2018, as Falls Prevention Awareness Day. “Iowa averages 10,825 falls-related hospitalizations every year,” said Maggie Ferguson of the IDPH Office of Disability, Injury and Violence Prevention.

IDPH Urges Iowans to be Mindful of West Nile Virus (8/30/18)

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) reminds Iowans it is very important to use insect repellent to protect against mosquito bites, especially if spending extra time outdoors over the long Labor Day weekend. West Nile virus is transmitted through mosquitoes. There are currently 18 confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Iowa and 16 are under investigation.

Iowa Reports First West Nile Death of 2018 (8/3/2018)

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced the first reported 2018 Iowa death associated with West Nile virus in an elderly adult (81+ years of age) from Central Iowa. A second case of human West Nile virus infection has also been reported in a Palo Alto County adult (61 to 80 years of age) male who has recovered.

The Iowa HIV Disease End-of-Year 2017 Surveillance Report finds that while the 125 Iowans diagnosed with HIV in 2017 was the second highest number on record, it was down from the 137 diagnoses in 2016.

Cyclospora Infections Associated with Salad at Fast Food Chain (7/12/18)

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is investigating an increase in Cyclospora infections that appear to be connected to consumption of McDonald’s salads. The Illinois Department of Public Health has noted a similar increase in cases associated with the product.
