Iowa Stroke Death Rates Continue to Decline, Depart from National Trend (10/3/17)

Earlier this month, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a “Vital Signs” report indicating that after decades of decline, progress in preventing stroke deaths has slowed. The report found stroke death declines have stalled in three out of every four states. Only 13 states saw stroke death rates continue to decrease steadily from 2000 to 2015. Iowa is one of those states.

Prevalence Falls Slightly, but Iowa Adults Still Struggling with Obesity (8/31/17)

CDC data released today show the proportion of Iowa adults with obesity has fallen slightly, from 32.1 percent in 2015 to 32.0 percent in 2016. Of the 54 U.S. states and territories included in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) report, Iowa is one of 16 that showed a decline in self-reported obesity.

Iowa Summit Focuses on Hunger among Older Iowans (5/2/17)

According to a 2016 survey by Feeding America, nearly 81,000 older Iowans (age 60 and over) are estimated to be “food insecure,” that is, they do not have reliable access to affordable, nutritious food. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is a co-sponsor of the Growing Bolder Hunger Summit, scheduled for May 9, 2017, at Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, where this issue will be examined.

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) today recognized leaders in nutrition and physical activity at the 2017 Iowa Governor’s Conference on Public Health in Des Moines. The leaders must emulate the IDPH Bureau of Nutrition and Health Promotion vision of “an Iowa where healthy living is accessible, valued and supported by all.” The winners must strive to make the bureau’s mission a reality by “ensuring that Iowans have the opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle by providing education and resources, building partnerships and supporting communities.”
