Iowa Summit Focuses on Hunger among Older Iowans (5/2/17)

According to a 2016 survey by Feeding America, nearly 81,000 older Iowans (age 60 and over) are estimated to be “food insecure,” that is, they do not have reliable access to affordable, nutritious food. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is a co-sponsor of the Growing Bolder Hunger Summit, scheduled for May 9, 2017, at Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, where this issue will be examined.

Iowa Public Health Leaders Honored at Governor’s Conference (4/11/17)

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) today recognized leaders in nutrition and physical activity at the 2017 Iowa Governor’s Conference on Public Health in Des Moines. The leaders must emulate the IDPH Bureau of Nutrition and Health Promotion vision of “an Iowa where healthy living is accessible, valued and supported by all.” The winners must strive to make the bureau’s mission a reality by “ensuring that Iowans have the opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle by providing education and resources, building partnerships and supporting communities.”

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, people with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk for heart disease, stroke, and serious diabetes-related complications.

A new report prepared by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach for the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) finds only about 25 percent of Iowa’s largest cities have policies that support streets that serve cars, bikes, buses and walkers – so called ‘complete streets’ which are accessible to everyone.
