What is a Medical Cannabidiol Registration Card?

Medical Cannabidiol Registration Cards are issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation to patients and primary caregivers who complete the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) application process and are approved to legally “possess, use, dispense, deliver, transport, or administer cannabidiol …in accordance with the provisions of chapter 124E.” (HF 524). The card can assist in the provision of an affirmative defense for the use or possession of medical cannabidiol as specified in 124E.11 Use of medical cannabidiol - affirmative defenses.

The Medical Cannabidiol Registration Card includes the following information:

If issued to the patient (age 18 or older):

  • patient’s full legal name
  • current Iowa residential address
  • date of birth
  • sex designation
  • issue date
  • expiration date
  • a distinguishing registration number
  • patient’s signature (captured electronically)
  • a color photograph of the patient
  • a statement that the card is not valid for identification purposes

If issued to the patient’s primary caregiver:

  • primary caregiver’s full legal name
  • current residential address
  • date of birth
  • sex designation
  • issue date
  • expiration date
  • a distinguishing registration number
  • primary caregiver’s signature (captured electronically)
  • a color photograph of the primary caregiver
  • a statement that the card is not valid for identification purposes
  • a statement distinguishing the card holder as the primary caregiver
  • the registration card number of each patient in the primary caregiver’s care.  If the patient in the primary caregiver’s care is under the age of eighteen, the full name of the patient’s parent or legal guardian will be included.
