New HIV Diagnoses up 27 Percent in Iowa

The Iowa Department of Public Health’s (IDPH) annual HIV Surveillance Report for 2015 finds there were 124 new HIV diagnoses last year, an increase of 27 percent from the 98 cases reported in 2014.

Iowa Communities Recognized for Fluoridation

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced today that six Iowa communities have been awarded fluoride certificates by the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors on behalf of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and American Dental Association (ADA). Fluoridation is the adjustment of fluoride in the water to an optimal level for preventing tooth decay.

The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner (IOSME) and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) today issued a reminder for parents and caregivers to keep a close eye on children playing in or around water. According to IOSME, three children have died from drowning in the last week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates nearly seven out of 10 smokers want to quit; however, quitting smoking is hard and may require several attempts. People who stop smoking often start again because of withdrawal symptoms, stress, and weight gain. Even so, benefits of quitting tobacco far outweigh the challenges.

West Nile virus is transmitted through mosquitoes.
