Each year, thousands of Iowans experience a brain injury. Falls, motor vehicle crashes and sports injuries are the leading causes of “traumatic brain injury” or TBI in Iowa. More than 17,000 Iowans receive medical attention for a brain injury each year.

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is recruiting individuals interested in issues related to newborn screening for inherited conditions. The project coordinated through the IDPH Center for Congenital and Inherited Disorders will bring together a diverse and representative group of Iowans for a weekend to help determine future policy for the state’s newborn screening program.

IDPH Says Norovirus Behind Several Outbreaks (1/30/18)

Over the past several weeks, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has received numerous reports of diarrhea and vomiting outbreaks caused by norovirus. While norovirus activity occurs year-round, it is traditionally higher in the colder months because people are indoors more and in closer contact. Norovirus spreads very easily when people fail to stay home when ill with diarrhea or vomiting, and when they don’t wash their hands after going to the bathroom.
